GETTING STARTED AS A WEB DESIGNER
My first job right out of college was in donor development for a non-profit organization. I loved my job since I was able to combine doing work that felt meaningful with the skills I learned in college as a Communications major.
During this time, I decided to continue learning by taking an online course in HTML. It was through this coding class that I learned to build websites from scratch. No page builders, no templates, just writing script in Notepad before uploading the files to a web server.
This experience helped me gain an understanding of how to structure a website so browsers and search engines understand what the website is about. Nowadays, we call this SEO.
HONING MY WEB DESIGN SKILLS
After a year and a half, I began a new job at a public radio station. I stayed with this employer for over a decade. It was at the radio station I had the opportunity to grow even more in my web design and content management skills. I was also privileged with the opportunity to utilize my graphic design skills through designing donor thank you gifts (apparel, mugs, etc) and other marketing creatives.
I started at the station in the role of Membership Coordinator, and was later given the opportunity to move into the role of Marketing Coordinator. In this new role, I became responsible for marketing the radio station as a whole. This led to my passion for branding and creating a consistent look and feel for businesses.
During my time at the radio station, I also became point person for the website. That included managing the content of the site, implementing and maintaining a secure way donors could contribute online, and seeing the site through a handful of upgrades and redesigns.
Being the Marketing Coordinator for the radio station gave me the opportunity to develop a marketing routine that incorporated content creation, email marketing, social marketing, print advertising, radio ads, direct mail, sponsorships, contests, and event marketing. I really enjoyed strategizing how to mesh all these advertising campaigns together to maximize the station’s marketing reach.
DEVELOPING MY PREFERENCE FOR WEB DESIGN
Soon after I began in my role as the Marketing Coordinator, I took a marketing-related seminar. The instructor warned that many new marketing professionals only stay in the field for about 2 years before getting burned out. It was a concerning statistic for me at the time.
I look back on that experience, though, thankful that I’ve been able to stay in the marketing field for much longer than 2 years. I also realize what that statistic demonstrates is that marketing can be overwhelming even to the people who are trained and educated to tackle the work.
When it came to the station’s website, the content management systems that housed the site were good. However, at times I found myself wishing I had more creative control of the site.
This experience led me to do significant research on website builders and CMS when I started my own business. I wanted a system that would give me complete creative control, so I could create websites, not just customize templates. (Spoiler Alert: I found a system that gives me this ability and I love it!)
PURSUING MY PASSION AS A WEB DESIGNER
Fast forward to 2019 and I found myself with two young children and a desire to be at home with them before my oldest started kindergarten. Through prayer and conversations with family, I decided to leave my full-time job and start Webb Digital Services, LLC.
Many people in my family own their own businesses. Because of this, I have been inspired all my life by people who work extremely hard, push themselves, and achieve success through self-employment.
I grew up watching how hard small business owners work, seeing critical is it to make every expense worthwhile in growing the business, and understand the importance of working smart so you still have energy left at the end of the day to enjoy family. This is what gives me a passion to help small business owners with their websites and digital marketing.
Marketing a business can be overwhelming, time consuming, and leave business owners wondering what efforts really pay off. It’s through my experience in web design, SEO, marketing, and graphic design that I strive to help small business owners reach success and attain measurable goals for their businesses.
